including spares. Registered VH-BZD to Ansett Airways Pty.
Ltd. 21/6/54 - originally 44 passengers, but later converted to 52
passengers. The Ansett crew undertook conversion training with
Braniff Airways, before taking delivery. It was ferried to
Australia by Captains C R Sealey, A. Lane, A. Thomson & G. L.
Brown & Navigator E. W. P Adams. It departed San Diego
4/8/54, routing via Kansas City, New York, Gander, Shannon, London,
Rome, Beirut, Bahrain, Karachi, New Delhi, Calcutta, Singapore,
Jakarta, Darwin, Brisbane, Sydney, arriving Essendon 16/8/54.
Its 1st service was Essendon-Sydney-Brisbane 4/10/54. At some
stage, it was upgraded to have CV-440-type engine exhausts; but
other features were never upgraded to CV-440 standard by Ansett.
It was leased to Butler Air Transport, with the 1st Butler Air
Transport service being Sydney-Casino 3/10/58. Sold to the
Beldex Corp., via Remmert Werner, Inc. 1/3/59; departing Essendon-Nadi-Canton
Is.-Honolulu-San Francisco the same day. Struck-Off-Register
16/3/59. On arrival in the U.S., it was reregistered N440W,
converted to
CV-440
standard & fitted with an executive interior, for Schenley
Industries. Reregistered N1846 to the Southern Ohio Railroad
Co., 31/10/62. To Mead Corp., Ohio. To Air Transport

It was built as a CV-340-51A, completed 2/4/54 & stored.
It was later purchased by Ansett Airways. Registered VH-BZE to
Ansett Airways Pty. Ltd. 4/2/55 - originally 44 passengers, but
later converted to 52 passengers. Handed over to Ansett
Airways 24/2/55. It departed San Diego 3/3/55 San
Francisco-Honolulu-Canton Island-Nadi, Noumea, Essendon; arriving
Essendon 9/3/55 (Capts. R. Sealey & J. Woodgate & Navigator
E. W. P Adams). It entered service 24/4/55. At some
stage, it was upgraded to have CV-440-type engine exhausts; but
other features were never upgraded to CV-440 standard by Ansett.
It was leased to Butler Air Transport 5/8/58, to replace Ambassadors
& operated in the full Butler sky-blue color-scheme. Sold

Flew Sydney-Broken Hill 11/7/60 & was handed over to an Ansett
crew for a flight to Melbourne. Registered to Airlines of S.A.

25/11/69. On 25/3/71, it suffered a bird-strike on take-off
from West Beach, Adelaide, damaging an engine cowling. It was
ferried Adelaide-Essendon 15/2/72 & was Struck-Off-Register
27/4/73. Sold 5/73 to Jack M. Garfinkle (t/a South East Asia
Air Transport), in Bangkok, as N102KA. Leased to Khmer Akas
